Hiring a Marine Professional 1. Use the web to search for contractors in your area. Do they have a website? Do they show jobs in progress or pictures of previous work? 2. Contact at least 2 to 3 contractors by telephone or email. Be sure to track the time it takes to get a response. Set an appointment. 3. Be present when the contractor arrives. Discuss with him or her your project. If the project involves repair of an existing area, be sure to explain, in detail, the problem. If the project is new construction or installation, show any drawings or sketches to the contractor. Be sure to get a written proposal which should include pricing, estimated completion and materials to be used. Was the bid submitted in a timely manner and did the bid spell out all phases of the work to be performed? 4. Compare all bids. 5. Be your own advocate: a. Call any references. b. Check with the state to see if permits are required. c. Is the company insured and bonded? Ask for copies of documents. d. Check with the Better Business Bureau. 6. All work performed should be on a contractual basis only… no verbal agreements. Check the contract for details previously discussed (pricing, materials to be used, duration).
